The scientific name of anthurium is Anthurium andraeanum, which belongs to the Araceae family. It is the largest genus in the family, with about a hundred species. It is widely known for the common names “laceleaf,” “tailflower,” and “flamingo flower.” 

Origin and History

Anthurium originated from the Americas, particularly in northern Argentina, northern Mexico, and some parts of the Caribbean. It has more than 1000 genera with species that range up to 1500. Anthuriums have been noted to grow in hotter climates. Out of the many places that grow this flower, Hawaii has cultivated one of the most beautiful blooms for more than 100 years.

Many varieties of anthurium have flowers with heart-shaped petals. It’s due to this that anthurium became widely recognised as a symbol of hospitality. There is also the belief that it brings protection from evil and good luck. Some also believe that when it closes up, it means that it will rain soon. On that note, know that it can tolerate all light levels, but it grows best in bright but indirect light. As for the soil, it needs it to be free draining and capable of holding some water.

Overwatering can result in the roots drying since this plant is vulnerable to root rot.
