About Gerbera

Gerbera is a type of daisy that originated from Africa. This flower is cultivated in different parts of the world and is known for its pleasant aesthetic and bright colours. This species of daisy is also called Gerber or Transvaal daisy.

This bloom is characterized by large flowering heads looking closely similar to sunflowers. It is A Popular flower, along with tulips, roses, chrysanthemums, and carnations. Gerbera is also a bloom said to brighten someone’s mood or day easily.

Scientific Name

Gerbera is a genus, under which are various species of daisies such as the Barberton daisy (Gerbera jamesonii) and Hilton daisy (Gerbera aurantiaca). Gerbera is also sometimes called the African daisy.

Origin and History

Gerbera is indigenous to South-Eastern Africa. Of this genus, Gerbera jamesonii was first scientifically described by J.D.H.in 1889 for Curtis Botanical Magazine. This Gerbera species has a large capitulum with two-lipped striking ray florets in red, pink, orange, yellow, and white colors. However, its morphology differs based on its position on the capitulum.

Gerbera was first discovered in 1884 by Robert Jameson. Though Jameson was the one who found Gerbera, it was named after Traugott Gerbera, a German Botanist. About 40 species of Gerbera were documented, and some of these species are still native to South Africa. This flower belongs to the daisy family, but is also related to the aster family. Gerbera is related to marigolds and sunflowers as well.

Symbolism and Meaning

Gerbera carries diverse meanings and symbols to different cultures. Some Egyptians believed that Gerbera symbolizes devotion to the sun and closeness to nature. On the other hand, Celts believe that Gerbera means a flower that lessens the stress and sorrows of everyday life. Generally, this flower symbolizes loyal love, cheerfulness, purity, and innocence.

Arrangements

Gerbera flowers make a lovely bouquet when arranged in a group. The blooms can also come brighter and even more alive when complemented with other flowers. With a variety of beautiful and bright colours, Gerbera makes a charming accent to any floral arrangement, bouquets, or floral gifts.
