The scientific name of a snapdragon is Antirrhinum, the name of the genus it belongs to and is part of the Antirrhineae family. The name of this flowering plant came from the fact that it looks like a dragon when squeezed.
History and Origin
Snapdragon is native to North Africa and Europe. It spread throughout the world and reached the US through the colonists. Tracing its history is a bit difficult as it has changed so many times throughout the year. What’s known is it was once one of three genetic subsections, which now have its own genus thanks to advanced DNA mapping.
