The prestigious Spring Flower Show in London is back! Get ready to be wowed by extraordinary landscapes and show-stopping gardens and floral displays.
As preparation, you may want to equip yourself with a bit of an RHS Chelsea Flower Show background.
History of Chelsea Flower Show
Dubbed “The Greatest Flower Show in the World,” this event held annually in May in London draws hundreds and thousands of visitors from across the globe. People come to marvel at the impressive display of blooms.
It was in 1913, the 20th of May, when the first RHS Chelsea Flower Show was held. It was known as the Great Spring Show. In 1951, a big change came to the flower show when the tents were replaced by a single marquee supported by 278 tent posts and covered 1.5 hectares. A bigger change came in 2000 when the old marquee was removed and replaced by a pavilion.
The event has been held at The Royal Hospital Chelsea in London for the last 109 years. This hospital is home to retired soldiers from the British Army. The hospital is attached to 66 acres of land which includes the Ranelagh Gardens and the South Grounds where the Chelsea Flower Show is held.
It takes more than a year to plan one RHS Chelsea Flower Show and about a week to dismantle everything from the site. To prepare for this big flower event, flowering plants are moved between cold storage and greenhouses to delay or advance flowering. Aside from flowers, you’ll also see vegetable and fruit exhibits.
Culminating the event is The Great Plant Sell-Off where exhibitors put their plants and flowers on sale at reduced prices. You’ll hear a bell ring on the final day signaling the start of the plant sale.
2022 RHS Chelsea Flower Show: What to Expect
Up until this day, the Chelsea Flower Shop retains its status as the premier horticultural event.
For this year, the much-loved event will run from 24th (Tuesday) to 28th (Saturday) May 2022 at The Royal Hospital, Chelsea. This year’s theme will focus on embracing the wild and bringing nature back. Designers are encouraged to use rarely seen native species and exhibit the naturalistic beauty of lush woodlands and wildflower meadows.
Expect to be mesmerized by blooming hedgerows, natural planting schemes, wild-inspired floral havens, and gardens in soft meadow colours. This year’s colour palette promises greens combined with pinks, whites, and creams.
There will be 13 show gardens, 11 sanctuary gardens, 5 container gardens, and 4 balcony gardens. For the categories, expect to see a Small Space Gardening area where you will have ample inspiration for creating pockets of greenery in small, compact spaces. The Sanctuary Gardens is another category and it puts a strong emphasis on biodiversity-rich spaces.
A brand-new garden category will be present this year, All About Plants, to celebrate the positive influence of plants on mental health as well as on the community and industry.
The Chelsea Garden Show isn’t just a place for relishing in a floral feast. There, you can also advance your knowledge in horticultural science through the Discovery Zone. It is also the perfect place to buy plants, flowers, and horticultural products for your home and garden. Across the showground is a mouthwatering array of food and drinks, too.
Enjoy an inspiring day out with friends and family at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Booking early is highly recommended for tickets sell out quickly.
