Rose

There’s probably not one person who doesn’t recognise a rose. As one of the most popular flowers in the world, its blooms are often the first choice when looking for a floral gift, be it a bouquet or an arrangement. But there’s a lot more to know about roses, and we can learn about that below.

About Rose

Roses are the woody perennial flowering plant with about 300 species of roses recorded. Whether they’re the trailing or the climbing type, roses come with stems that usually include sharp prickles. As for the flowers, you will see the blooms have five petals and sepals with numerous stamens surrounding the pistil. The petals of rose flowers aren’t fused. They are showy and large, particularly the petals of a garden rose.

Scientific Name

Rose is the name of the different flowers from the genus Rosa and the family Rosaceae. Each species under the Rosa genus has different scientific names, such as Rosa arkansana (the prairie rose) and Rosa arvensis (the field rose).

Origin and History

Roses are among the oldest flowering plants in the world. These are believed to originate in Central Asia. Over time, they grow widely in most parts of the northern hemisphere. Cultivating roses began in Asia around 5000 years ago and eventually became an essential part of human civilization since then. About 30-35 thousand cultivars and rose hybrids have been selected and bred for garden use.

Symbolism and Meaning

The rose flowers symbolize romance and love classically, but their meaning goes beyond that depending on the flower’s colour. Red typically means love and passion, while pink signifies admiration and gratitude. Yellow roses mean happiness and warmth, while white connotes grace and purity. Roses also have a meaning not associated with the colour, as they also mean confidentiality or secrecy. Even the number of roses can tell you something, with one rose symbolizing “love at first sight” and ten roses meaning “you’re perfect.”

How to Take Care of Roses

Rose plants should be planted in a sunny spot with good drainage. It’s a must that you fertilize them regularly for beautiful and impressive blooms. Water them regularly as well and ensure that moist soil is maintained. For established roses, it is advisable to prune them in early spring.
