About Ranunculus

A Ranunculus refers to the genus of flowering plants with beautiful blooms in varying shades, such as red, pink, yellow, orange, purple, white, and cream. Certain varieties of the flower are a favourite in ornamental gardens. The Ranunculus flowers are best grown in places with mild winters. In colder areas, they can grow successfully in containers.

Scientific Name of Ranunculus

The scientific name of Ranunculus flowers is Ranunculus, also the name of the genus belonging to the Ranunculaceae family. The blooms themselves are also called Ranunculus. Some of the flowers that are part of the genus are buttercups, water crowfoots, and spearworts, among the over 600 recognised species. Ranunculus is a Late Latin term that translates to “little frog.” It likely references how many of its species can be near water, the same as frogs.

Origin and History

The flower is originally native to Asia, but some species can be found in some areas in the Americas. In the past, children used buttercup in their games where their chins turned yellow. Holding the yellow petals up to their chin resulted in a beautiful sunshine glow cast back. Ranunculus are stunning blooms, but some varieties of the flowers are poisonous to cattles. For years, they have been a problem for farmers.

Meaning and Symbolism

Ranunculus is unique in that it does not have multiple meanings. These blooms symbolise radiant charm. Giving a person a Ranunculus flower is telling them, “You are charming,” or “You are attractive.”

Arrangements

While these flowers are not often arranged as a bouquet on their own, they are perfect when mixed with other blooms. Ranunculus flowers make luxurious floral arrangements when combined with roses, calla lilies, orchids, nerines, tulips, and anemones. They are excellent centrepieces and floral decorations for any occasion.
