Scientific Name

Chrysanthemum, a flowering plant with the scientific name of Chrysanthemum, is a part of the Asteraceae family. Other names for this flower include “chrysanths” and “mums.” They are homegrown in northeastern Europe and Asia, with approximately 40 known species around the world.

Origin and History

For more than 250 centuries, chrysanthemums are popular in Chinese gardens. England recognized its natural beauty and was displayed at an exhibit in 1795.

The Chinese have high regard for this blooming plant and considered it as the flower for October. They also thought Chrysanthemums are noble plants along with bamboo, orchid, and plum.

Even the Japanese adores chrysanthemums, placing them on the emperor’s throne. The Japanese Imperial family’s fascination with this flower is why it ended up part of the Imperial Crest of Japan.

Symbolisms and Arrangements

The flower has been around for several centuries, given many different meanings and symbolisms throughout the years.

Chrysanthemums generally symbolize optimism and joy. The Japanese consider it as the symbol of the sun. They are so fascinated by the flower that they have an annual celebration for it known as the “Festival of Happiness.”

The meaning of chrysanthemums differs depending on the colour. White typically means devoted love or loyalty. Red mums represent love, while the yellow ones signify sorrow or neglected love.

Chrysanthemums are ideal event plants in Asia. They are often used in baby showers and birthdays to convey rebirth and life. In Europe, the flower means sympathy, while they express honour and respect in America.

You can use chrysanthemums in numerous flower arrangements, such as cascade, oval-shaped, triangular, vertical, and elliptical. Chrysanthemums are also perfect bouquets and floral gifts for formal events.
