About Tulip

Tulips are spring-blooming, showy, large, and brightly coloured flowers. The blooms often come in yellow, pink, white, and red colours, with a coloured blotch seen at the base of tepals internally. Tulips often have three sepals and petals that are silky and smooth.

Scientific Name

The scientific name of tulip is Tulipa. Tulipa is a genus of herbaceous, spring-blooming perennials. Tulip derived its name from a Persian word that means turban due to its resemblance.

Origin and History

Tulips are native to Europe, Asia, and Africa. Tulips’ commercialization began in the Ottoman Empire. Richard S. Fay was credited to be the person who grew the first tulips in the US, particularly in Massachusetts. Tulips were found in a band that spanned from Southern Europe to Central Asia. Since the 17th century, these flowers have become extensively naturalized and cultivated.

Classification of tulips has been controversial and complex due to the long cultivation history and level of variability within populations. Tulips belong to the lily family or Liliaceae together with 14 genera. There are 75 species divided among four sub-genera.

Symbolism and Meaning

Tulips are associated with beautiful meanings and symbolism. Red tulips symbolize love, while the yellow ones represent cheerful thoughts. On the other hand, white tulips signify forgiveness, and the purple tulips represent royalty. Tulips deeply symbolise love and devotion, likely why it is the traditional flower for the 11th wedding anniversary.

Tulips are highly preferred flowers when creating bouquets and floral arrangements for different venues, especially weddings. Tulips also look great even by just putting them in your favourite vase. Tulip arrangements are the perfect pieces to welcome spring. A floral arrangement of tulips is sure to brighten and bring up the ambiance of any room.
