The name calendula came from Latin “calendae,” which means little clock, little-weather glass, or little calendar. This flower has more than 20 known species, and some of them are annual plants, which means they require replanting during their blooming season. This flowering plant comes in different colors, including orange, gold, and yellow. This bloom is popular in various events, such as wedding ceremonies.

History and Origin

Calendula is an attractive flowering plant native to Mediterranean regions, Southwest Asia, Macaronesia, and other areas in Europe. Homeowners would place a few cuts of this bloom near the Virgin’s statues and call it “Mary’s gold.” This bloom is used for treating digestive tract issues. Beyond that, its bright petals are also used to dye clothes.

Symbolisms

Calendula is considered October’s birth flower. It symbolizes mourning, sorrow, and sadness. Other cultures believe that the bloom shows the meaning of the phrase “winning grace.” During the Victorian age, people sent this flower to their relatives or close friends to say, “My prayers and thoughts are with you during this deepest state of your life.”
